About 'espn sports golf'|Who Says Golf isn't a Non-Contact Sport
Funny sports quotes have been an American tradition since New York Yankees star Yogi Berra began spouting his famous twisted phrases, each of which had their own strange logic. Here are some examples from Yogi's website: "It gets late early out here." "It's like déjà vu all over again." "Little League baseball is a very good thing because it keeps the parents off the street." "The future ain't what it used to be." "Never answer an anonymous letter." At age 81, Yogi still spouts a zinger or two. He recently said, "He hits from both side of the plate. He's amphibious." Thankfully, other notable sports figures have also managed to keep Yogi's legacy alive. Joe Theismann As a sports announcer on ESPN, former football great Joe Theismann said, "The term 'genius' is inapplicable to anyone in this game. A genius is Norman Einstein." Theismann later claimed to Sports Illustrated that, in high school, he did have a smart classmate named Norman Einstein. George Brett Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett once said, "If a tie (in baseball) is like kissing your sister, losing is like kissing your grandmother with her teeth out." George Foreman Former boxing Heavyweight Champion George Foreman said, "There's more to boxing than hitting. There's no getting hit, for instance." Tiger Woods Golf legend Tiger Woods said, "Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a sport for white men dressed like pimps." Dizzy Dean Some say that pitcher Dizzy Dean, another Baseball Hall of Famer, originated the tradition of twisted quotes, but most of his were made when he was a sports announcer. Dean died in 1974, but his quotes live on. They're almost as famous as Yogi Berra's. Here are some examples from Diz's website: "The doctors X-rayed my head and found nothing." "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up." "Dean once said to a batter, "Son, what kind of pitch would you like to miss?" "Sure, I eat what I advertise. Sure, I eat Wheaties for breakfast. A good bowl of Wheaties with bourbon can't be beat." "He slud into third." "The good Lord was good to me. He gave me a strong body, a good right arm, and a weak mind." Gordie Howe Detroit Red Wings hockey great Gordie Howe said, "American professional athletes are bilingual. They speak English and profanity." Sandy Lyle Former golf Masters winner Sandy Lyle said, "It's not whether you win or lose - but whether I win or lose." Tug McGraw When asked whether he preferred grass or Astroturf, Tug said, "I dunno. I never smoked Astroturf." He also said, "Always root for the winner. That way you won't be disappointed."
