The Russian Olympic Head has officially resigned. Leonid Tyagachev resigned as head of the Russian Olympic Committee after he was warned that he would be fired if he did not resign voluntarily. The Russian Federation didn't perform as well as they wanted to at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, and it has led to a number of complaints about how the Russian Olympic Committee is being run. Russian president Dmitry Medvedev issued an ultimatum at the end of the games that anyone that helped the Olympics in an official capacity needed to either voluntarily resign from their positions or that they would be fired. Tyagachev seems to taken the former route. Gone are the days where the USSR continuously found itself either first or second at nearly every Olympic Games, and now Russia found itself posting the lowest medal total that they have ever had at a Winter Games. Russia won 15 medals, which may seem like a lot to a number of countries, but has been seen as an embarrassment by many of the people in Russia that are in power right now. This was supposed to be a successful Olympics showing before Russia hosts the 2014 Winter Olympics, and things did not go according to plan. Russia was only able to win three gold medals in Vancouver, making their president quite unhappy. The medal target for Russia had been 30, but they didn't really come close to that in Vancouver. Now these maneuvers could be seen as a way for the country to save face after a frustrating performance, but it seems like a difficult premise to blame the head of the Russian Olympic Committee for the performance of athletes in winter sports. It has to be frustrating to be at the top of an Olympic Committee in a country like Russia, where expectations are almost at a life-and-death level sometimes. Whether Russia finds more success in the 2014 Winter Games may depend on how well they do at finding athletes to compete is some of the newer Olympic events. Let's see it Tyagachev's replacement is better at keeping that goal in mind. References: Vancouver Medal Counts Tyagachev Resigns |
